The EMerge Alliance is a membership-based, not-for-profit industry association formed in 2008 to create and promote the adoption of new vanguard standards for direct current (DC) and hybrid AC/DC power infrastructure in buildings, neighborhoods and communities — with one overarching goal: greater power resiliency, surety, and equity.
Vision
To have a mesh network of advanced DC and hybrid AC/DC microgrids integrated throughout our electric power system infrastructure — for improved energy resiliency, surety, safety, reliability, efficiency and environmental compatibility.
Mission
To lead in promoting the greater use of direct current in DC and hybrid AC/DC power systems that provide greater inherent resiliency, safety, operational surety, and sustainability.
For providers and users involved in distributed generation, EMerge Alliance promotes better, more practical ways of getting the most out of direct current and the combination of AC and DC power technologies. We develop and maintain open standards that integrate renewable and non-renewable sources, wiring infrastructure, controls and a wide range of loads — from lighting and plug loads to building- and campus-level HVAC and connected IoT — adding flexibility, resiliency, safety and sustainability to new construction and renovation alike.
A mesh-networked “Grid of Grids”
This hybrid AC and DC platform is promoted as an open architecture focused on increasing resiliency while reducing total cost. It anticipates a much greater integration of direct current to simplify — and make more flexible — power integration from multiple sources, storage and loads.
To realize that vision, what’s needed is a family of DC and hybrid AC/DC power-system standards and guidelines for microgrids that meet the evolving needs of a “Grid of Grids” electric power infrastructure.

What we do
Develop vanguard standards
We create system standards with commercial, government and academic members to accelerate deployment of flexible, sustainable AC/DC microgrids. Standards issued by EMerge Alliance are elevated for adoption by bodies such as IEEE and ANSI.
Catalyze market development
We build live, full-scale microgrid demonstrations — including at RE+’s annual conference — giving members the chance to grow brand awareness and forge new partnerships across the value chain.
Educate the industry
We share microgrid applications and ecosystems through the Electric Avenue webinar series, RE+ regional events, and the Grid Edge Theater on the RE+ show floor.
Liaisons & partners
EMerge Alliance collaborates with liaison organizations across the standards and energy community — including IEEE, the IEC, NFPA, SEPA, SEIA and NEMA. See the full list of liaison & affiliated organizations.
